Wood Green bank bail-in to defend the NHS

Posted: June 2, 2011

Members of Haringey Alliance for Public Services and others occupied Lloyd’s Bank in Wood Green, London on Saturday 28th May. This was part of a national ‘UK Uncut’ day of local actions to defend the NHS involving similar bank occupations all over the country. Up to 30 campaigners dressed in doctors’ and nurses’ uniforms with fake blood set up an “emergency operating theatre” inside the Wood Green bank. Members of Defend Haringey Health Services, Defend Whittington Hospital Coalition, Haringey Right To Work campaign and Haringey Solidarity Group, and others who weren’t from any group, including health care workers and service users, joined in the event, chanting “Whose NHS, Our NHS!”. Children tried to operate on a toy version of Andrew Lansley, health secretary, and bank customers filled out prescriptions for their GPs to resist the Health and Social Care bill.

The day before, 30 Haringey activists gathered at Wood Green library and presented an e-petition of over 413,000 ‘Save The NHS’ protest signatures to Government representative and local MP Lynne Featherstone during her surgery. www.38degrees.org.uk/page/s/Protect_our_NHS_Petition#petition
