Justice delayed is justice denied

Saturday 3rd August marked the second anniversary of the death of Mark Duggan at the hands of armed police, and the twentieth anniversary of the death of Joy Gardner at the hands of immigration officers. At a packed public meeting at North London Community House, members of their families and others shared their stories and talked about the ongoing campaigns for justice.

Frente Solidario Internacional have produced a video of the event: Justice delayed is justice denied, and The Guardian also posted a short video: Tottenham remembers: Mark Duggan anniversary marked with justice campaign

The meeting took place just days after the Independent Police Complaints Commission announced that it had found “no evidence to indicate criminality” in relation to Duggan’s death, according to an article in the newspaper The Voice. The article goes on to say:

“An IPCC commissioner will decide whether to refer the case to prosecutors once its report – which will be finished this month – is finalised.

“At a meeting organised by the Tottenham Defence Campaign, Duggan’s aunt, Carole Duggan, said: ‘The [IPCC] has been incompetent from day one. They’ve had to apologise to us as a family on numerous occasions because they’ve not investigated thoroughly. They’ve not been transparent at all.’

“She added that she wanted the officers involved to be prosecuted.

“‘It’s been two years and we are now waiting for the inquest to get the answers to the questions we have about how and why Mark was killed,’ she said.”
