Ward’s Corner: Help stop Grainger from covering up the lives and buildings they plan to demolish!

Grainger have submitted an application to hang a gigantic advertising hoarding that will span the entire corner building of the Wards Department store. Below is a picture of what it will look like: you got to see it to believe it!
Not least does this fail to compliment the conservation area, they are a flagrant attempt by Grainger to disguise the devastating impact of their demolition plans and mislead people about the supposed benefits.
The official deadline to submit comments is almost up but the Council will accept comments up until they make a decision (likely Mid-March). You can view and object to their application here.

Here is some text you can use:
I wish to object to this application as it contravenes Haringey’s policies SPG 6a- Shopfronts, Signage and Security and SPG 6b- Advertisements. The advertisement is not appropriate for the building or its setting – in this case a conservation area. It is an enormous sign that covers a locally listed building – a building that has been identified in the Council’s Tottenham High Road Areas Appraisal as providing a positive contribution to the Seven Sisters/Page Green Conservation Area. This does not comply with Policy SPG 6B to not obscure buildings with architectural features. Granting permission for this advertisement hoarding will set a dangerous planning precedent for conservation areas and should not be supported. Furthermore SPG 6b states that ‘the amount of adverts on a building or site should not cause a visual clutter.’ This advertisement will increase the visual clutter on the building and Haringey Council should reject it. Grainger PLC do not own the building and their supporting information is irrelevant – any application for an advertising hoarding of this nature and size should be rejected.
Save the date! – Our Tottenham Conference on Sat 6th April
Following the riots last summer the Council published their Plan for Tottenham, a glossy brochure restating their old plans to ‘regenerate’ Tottenham by demolishing genuinely affordable housing, replacing local independent businesses with chain stores and evicting vital community centres. The plans were produced by the Tottenham Task Force, an exclusive group of politicians and regeneration ‘experts’ without any involvement of local people.
Our Tottenham is a network of residents groups, campaigns and individuals who are affected by the Council’s regeneration plans. The network was launched in January by 40 reps and members of 20 Tottenham groups.
They aim to:
- Build a Tottenham-wide campaign supporting community-led projects that improve our neighbourhoods.
- Defend our vital community centres that are under threat from evictions and cuts.
- Resist regeneration proposals that do not benefit the people of Tottenham.
- On Saturday 6th April Our Tottenham will host a day long conference exploring the ways we can bring people together to achieve these aims.

Jumble Sale Success!
On Sunday 17th Feb we had a jumble sale outside Seven Sisters Market. Loads of people came down and picked up some spectacular bargains. Thanks to all who donated, shopped and helped us on the day. All proceeds go towards the WCC legal fund.
