HSG leafletting with Fare Free London

The Haringey Solidarity Group and Fare Free London are out leafletting again in Turnpike Lane. Many people have signed our petition, calling on the Greater London Authority (GLA) to make transport free for all.

This isn’t just an idea. Around 400 places worldwide have already made public transport free, up from fewer than 100 in 2017. In the UK, Glasgow is planning a small trial. London shouldn’t be left behind.

Abolishing fares is, above all, a social measure. It makes the city more inclusive by removing the financial barrier and reshaping the city by breaking down divisions between rich and poor areas. It’s also an environmental measure, as fewer people will use their cars, reducing traffic pollution.

There are many ways to fund this transition, such as income and council tax reform, and redirecting funds away from fossil fuels, the arms trade, and war. Above all, fares are a regressive tax because low-income people spend a much greater share of their wages on transport. Abolishing fares helps those who need it most.

This is the time to act. The Fare-Free London campaign has started the conversation, and now all Londoners should take part. Free public transport should be a right, not a privilege.
