In response to the most vicious economic attacks in living memory… Launch of a trade union and community network
Tuesday 6th September 7pm – 9pm
North London Community House 22 Moorefield Road, Bruce Grove, N17 6PY
Meeting called by Haringey TUC and supported by local trade unions and community organisations.
The people of Haringey have had enough …
Together we are launching a Community & Trade Union ‘network’ against the backdrop of the worst cost of living crisis in living memory – inflation (RPI) is currently more than 12%, with predictions that it could reach 17.7% by the end of the year.
Fuel bills are expected to rise in October and then again in January, with recent predictions suggesting bills will reach an astronomical £5000. The NHS Confederation is saying that we are facing a ‘humanitarian crisis’.
At the same time the government and employers are offering pay increases well below the rate of inflation, and attacking working conditions while profits are booming. The top FTSE companies have seen a 73% growth in profits since 2019. Shell and BP alone had profits of £16.4billion in the first 3 months of this year.
On top of this we are seeing attacks on the right to protest, racist plans to send refugees to Rwanda, and a failure to combat the growing climate crisis, these are all issues that must be confronted.
But there is hope. The strikes by Rail, Postal, Bus and BT workers as well as Barristers have shown the way to fight back. Many other groups of workers have taken or are seriously considering voting for strike action, including college lectures. Haringey people march from Finsbury Park to Wood Green in support of Bus workers
This meeting will bring together representatives of all the major unions and community organisations to discuss how we can do so. Our aim is to create an alliance of trade unions and community organisations in Haringey which will seek to challenge oppression and inequality, and build a society that rebalances wealth and power in favour of the majority.
A starting point is discussing and deciding how we can build and support the current struggles over the cost of living and the attempts by employers and the government to make workers pay for the crisis – a crisis not caused by us but by the rich and ‘powerful’.
For too long we’ve accepted less while the rich take more, if you care about the state the country is in and want to help support your community and build a fightback, join us on 6th September.
In this moment let us build a movement.
