NO to demolition and corporate redevelopment!
YES to renewal and community empowerment!

Haringey Civic Centre, High Road, N22

Lobby the Planning Committee: Be Seen. Be Heard. Your Support is Vital. Come and Join In!

Private developers, Grainger’s, have made an application to demolish this historic and important site, evict the thriving indoor market and local family businesses there, and build a ‘clone town’ development of gated luxury flats and corporate chain stores. Their application has been scheduled to be put before the Council’s planning committee on Wednesday July 20th, 7pm.

There has been widespread public opposition including some of the largest public meetings organised by Tottenham residents for decades. Members of local residents associations in co-operation with the market traders, local businesses and community groups of all kinds have been working together as the Ward’s Corner Community Coalition. They have worked together to develop a genuine Community Plan for the protection, restoration and regeneration of the site and surrounding area – the Coalition are preparing to submit this Community Plan for planning permission as a positive proposal that everyone can support.

The WCCC campaigns for the community-led regeneration of Seven Sisters through:

– Development of locally-based businesses and the talents of local people
– Strengthening and empowering local communities
– Active respect for diverse cultures, social groups and people of all ages
– Conservation and celebration of local heritage and history
– The highest standards of environmental and social sustainability
– Rejection of big business, ‘clone’ solutions to local needs
– Development of the cultural, recreational and artistic life of the area

Now is the time to defend Tottenham’s communities and heritage. NO to demolition and corporate redevelopment! YES to renewal and community empowerment! Let’s protect and develop what is special about Tottenham. Let’s Plan for the Community.

Some background details from the Wards Corner Community Coalition

It was confirmed on 12th July, that the special planning committee to hear the Grainger Application is to be held on Wednesday 20th July 2011.

Back in the summer of 2010 the decision by Haringey Council to grant permission for Grainger to go ahead with their plans to demolish Wards Corner was quashed by the High Court. The Council had failed to conduct an Equalities Impact Assessment on the site and it was determined that failure to do so was unlawful and as such the permission was overturned.

In January 2011 Grainger resubmitted their plan largely unchanged despite the raft of clear and constant public opposition. The Council have now completed an Equalities Impact Assessment and the plan is ready to go before committee again.

In preparation for this the WCC have compiled a comprehensive objection document which is available on our website and on Haringey’s planning website. We are also making a number of representations in person at the committee.

You can read the WCC’s objection document here: http://wardscorner.wikispaces.com/Offical+objection+to+Grainger

Its imperative that as many people as possible to come to the committee meeting to show the Council the continuing strength of opposition to Grainger’s plan and to send a clear message that this community is a long long way from giving up the fight.

And there is plenty of fight left. In the event the committee pass the plan we will be resisting the compulsory purchase order process which would follow
thereafter. We have been continuing work on community led proposals for the site, with one application recently submitted for Fair Deal foods on West Green Rd, another close to submission for the Wards Building itself and an outline vision for the whole site in the works.

What can you do?
