No Evictions!  Cut Rents Not Benefits
Protest : Thursday 9th May, 8am, at Genesis Housing Association Head Office
Capital House, 25 Chapel Street, London, NW1 5DT (next to Edgware Rd tube, circle Line exit)

With the pilot of the Government’s benefit cap starting in four London boroughs on April 15, Genesis Housing Association wasted no time in threatening affected tenants with eviction. In fact, the trial had not even begun when they informed 57 residents in temporary accommodation that with the cap set at £350 for single people and £500 for families, that they “may not be able to afford the rent we charge” and that “Genesis will now need to start legal proceedings to obtain a Possession Order on the property as we may need to terminate our lease with the property owner early.”

The letter also warns them that the court can force an eviction within 14 days of making a possession order.

We will not stand by whilst this vicious Government policy turfs people out of their homes and onto the street.

And if one of the largest social landlords in the UK, Genesis, tells us that there are people in our community that “may not be able to afford the rent we charge”, then those rents are too expensive and they should be cut.

We also want to send a message to councils, housing associations and other landlords that we will resist evictions and any attempts to force families out of London to places as far away as Birmingham and Bradford.

The economic crisis, the severe shortage of homes and rising rents are not the fault of the poor and THEY should NOT be the ones being made to suffer.

If you or anyone you know has received one of these letters from Genesis, or is facing eviction because of benefit cuts, then please contact us on  07961 177889 OR 07817 483 167. The more people that come forward, the stronger will be our resistance to these savage cuts.

We demand:

* No Evictions – Genesis should rescind each of these claims for possession and guarantee that they will not evict their tenants because they have fallen foul of the benefit cap or any of the Government’s benefit cuts.

* Cut Rents – Genesis should reduce rents, negotiating with their landlords where necessary, to ensure that they are affordable for people affected by the benefit cap and other benefit cuts
