Private Lives
Directed by Abbe Robinson
Made in 2006 (16 minutes)
Leaving behind the monotony of her textile mill job on a Friday afternoon in the early 50’s, Ruth secretly takes a train to Manchester, where she meets a man on the platform. But all is not quite what it seems
My Beautiful Laundrette
Directed by Stephen Frears
Made in 1985 (97 minutes)
A witty and intelligent look at race, sexuality, and class in Thatcher’s Britain. This tale of a young Asian Londoner determined to make a success out of a run-down laundrette received an Oscar nomination for writer Hanif Kureishi – and deservedly so. Each character is rounded and well-defined, imbued with depth and complexity, and the central gay relationship is (for its time) remarkably free of guilt and not used as an incendiary plot device. Director Frears (Prick Up Your Ears, Dangerous Liasons, The Grifters) renders Kureishi’s script with a consistently comic touch. Expertly acted throughout; this remains a definitive snapshot of British life in the 1980s
Venue: West Green learning Centre, West Green Road, N15 3RB
